Stepping Away from Windows: Transitioning to Linux as a Mechanical Engineering Student

Coding essentially requires just a text editor, and the benefits of using a Unix-based operating system like Linux are limited to improving your workflow and having slightly superior command line capabilities, at least natively. Mechanical engineering, on the other hand, is deeply linked to Windows through an ecosystem of exclusive software. CAD and FEA tools like Inventor, SolidWorks, CATIA, and ANSYS are all Windows exclusive. Stepping away from that ecosystem means fighting an uphill battle, but at least for now, I think it was worth it.

Note: I made this change on all my personal computers. My work computer still runs Windows as is required by my company.
